Wood-Effect Coating Process for Fabricators


  • Base Preparation: Clean and pre-treat aluminum profiles to remove contaminants, ensuring proper adhesion.​

  • Powder Coating Base Layer: Apply a powder base coat which is typically a warm tone for optimal wood grain depth. Cure the layer at 180–200°C in an oven.​

  • Sublimation Film Transfer: Wrap profiles with a printed film featuring wood grain patterns. Under heat and vacuum/pressure, the design sublimates into the powder coat, fusing the pattern at a molecular level for a fade-resistant finish.​

  • Request Samples: Always review physical samples under real lighting to approve color/grain accuracy.​

  • Document RAL/Grain Codes: Specify exact pattern/code to match across batches and projects.​

  • Coordinate with Installers: Confirm fabrication and glazing processes won’t scratch or mar the coating.​

  • Ask About Matching: Ensure suppliers can match additional profiles and accessories or replace items in future phases.​


DON’Ts


  • Don’t Forget Testing: Skip suppliers who can’t provide accelerated weather/UV/bond tests for exterior doors/windows.​

  • Don’t Accept Uncertified Coatings: Only use powder and film systems meeting international facade standards 

  • Don’t Overlook Touch-Up Options: No system is scratch-proof. Confirm processes for retouching post-install.
